Winona Amtrak Station.

Well this was Week 2 of Chiaroscuro, only this week I had the task of going out and shooting an exposure that shows “meaning/depth” or something like that. Personally I am not a fan of taking images with a direct meaning or intent. I would rather have the viewer look at an image and pull their own meaning from it. but none the less, this is what I came up with. Hope you enjoy!

This photo is of the Winona Amtrak Station. I shot it on Saturday night, just as the Empire Builder arrived. Despite the numerous odd looks, I was able to capture this shot with a 20-30 second exposure using an aperture setting of f/8-16.

The “Final” print is actually the first print that I made. I was quite happy with it, but I wanted to clean the negative and try to remove some of the dust spots from it to make the second print look better. In the cleaning process, I ended up scratching the negative as you can see in the “Rough” image. In the “Rough” Image I also used less time, to try and bring out more of the building, however then I lost the true black of night, and was less than impressed. Over all, I think the first print is the best, and I went through quite a few test prints to get it to come out with such sharp contrast. In my opinion the shadows in the image emit sort of an eerie feeling, but how does it make you feel?

Until next time, Enjoy!

Photos of Essence.

This week I went out and attempted to capture photos that had a creative essence about them. I had to use the camera’s aperture, shutter speed, focal length, and exposure to create 4 interesting images. This is what I came up with. Enjoy!

Mr. Bobcat

This photo is of one of the WSU Groundskeepers removing snow from the sidewalk in the Quad Courtyard.

I wanted to convey the essence of Shutter in this image, so I used a shutter speed of 1/250 to stop the motion of the flying snow.

Tiny Tomatoes

This photo is of some berries that were on a limb near Conway hall at WSU.

I wanted this to show the essence of Aperture so I zoomed in to 300mm and used a relatively low aperture of f/11.0. This resulted in a very blurred background and makes the cluster of berries stand out.

Green Sun

This image is of the green led on my Apple Time Capsule. It is NOT meant to be taken literally. It is supposed to be abstract. It was taken  while I was laying in bed playing around with different focal lengths and amount of focus to to create this artistic photograph.

I used a focal length of 300mm and set the focus to the macro setting and cranked the ring almost all the way opposite from infinity. Without the 300mm zoom, I would not have been able to create this image, and that is why I say that this image conveys an essence of Focal Length.

Passing on By

This photo was taken  just off campus on Huff St. in Winona. It is of a car passing by.

I wanted to convey the essence of exposure. For this I combined a lower ISO of 500, a long shutter speed of 10 seconds, and a smaller aperture of f/18.0. This combination of settings allowed for the light trails from the car(s) to streak through the image and still allow for the background to come in crisp. The combination of shutter and aperture also allowed the lights in the image to generate a Star effect, which I personally find interesting.

All these photos were taken yesterday. I hope you enjoyed them, and stay tuned for more next week!
